As we embark on a new year, it's the perfect time to set fresh goals and explore new solutions. What are your aspirations for this year? Whether it's improving fitness, being more social, or enhancing organizational skills, now is the time to make positive changes.
My goals include building my business; connecting with friends and family, (despite being a natural introvert); and getting my work space better organized.
Building the Right Kind of Habits
No matter what our goals are, it's important that as we undertake our new goal/s that we create a plan or roadmap of how we will get there and develop cornerstone habits. For example whenever I have had the goal to lose weight, or eat healthier I have had minimal success. However, when I had a goal of getting into better shape by just doing one intentional physical exercise each day I saw way more success.
It turns out that exercising is a cornerstone habit, while eating healthier or losing weight are not. Both goals had the same desired end result, but by creating a roadmap and building cornerstone habits, I was more easily able to reach that goal. By not keeping it heavy or having a demanding schedule I was able to stay consistent. (For more information on developing cornerstone habits I recommend The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.)
Keeping Things Simple
Another goal that I am always working toward, especially in a busy large family, is the seemingly elusive organization. Our family moved a few years ago and while I love our new home, we don't have as much storage space as we used to. Life is very busy with 6 kids, (4 of whom are teens). With multiple busy schedules it leaves little time for finding, creating or making ingenious storage solutions that work for our family.
While one day I would like our whole house to be well organized again, for now, it is easier to work on one small thing at a time, like a dresser, or even finding cute organization systems for accessories.
Below are some of my favorite ways to store jewelry.
Where is the best place to store jewelry?
The best place to store jewelry is in a low humidity environment such as a bedroom. It's also a good idea to store it out of direct sunlight to avoid discoloration over time. If it's fine jewelry or has natural stones, it is a good idea to store it in a softly lined drawer or container as well to help protect against scratches.
Get Organized!
Below are some of my favorite organizers for jewelry.
I love these. They are super easy to use and at a quick glance I can see everything. I also love that the inserts can be adjusted based on my needs and can tuck neatly away into a drawer so it doesn’t add visual clutter in my space. This is good for any type of jewelry. I also love how quick and easy it is to add and organize pieces..
If you have natural stone items, you may need to be extra cautious in your placement so that the pieces don’t accidentally scratch each other.
I have one similar to this that my daughter made for me. I love how cute this simple design is. It looks great displayed on my dresser letting my jewelry provide a pop of color in my decor. I use the branches to display bracelets and necklaces and use the base at the bottom to store earrings that I wear frequently. It is also a quick and easy way to organize your pieces. No more than placing it and adding jewelry. It also makes a great gift.
However, I do not use it for my higher quality jewelry.
This is hands down my favorite way to store and organize jewelry. It is simple in design and is multifunctional with the mirror on the front. There is plenty of room to store everything. Plus it keeps the pieces away from direct sunlight and hanging nicely so that pieces won’t scratch each other.
The drawback with this piece is it does require installation and anchoring to your wall. It is heavy. (I still have mine leaning against a wall after our move.)
Final thoughts
There are many ways to organize jewelry. The keys are to find an aesthetic and system that works for you. I’d love to hear how you store your jewelry and what works for you.
After you get organized, you may even find that you have room for another pair of earrings. <wink>
